The newest superhero kids on the block are just that—kids. At least they start out kids in the first Umbrella Academy collection, written by the lead singer of My Chemical Romance (Way) and superbly illustrated by Brazilian graphic artist Ba. When the diminutive orphans turned masked crime fighters first appear in the public arena, with their wealthy patron, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, keeping watch, their nemesis is a mobile, death-ray-zapping Eiffel Tower. Twenty years later, it takes Hargreeves’ death to bring the gang members, now grown and separated by their own idiosyncratic ambitions, back together to face a new enemy: estranged sister Vanya, the only one of them presumed to be powerless. Newly gifted with destructive powers by a race of robotic aliens, Vanya will stop at nothing to destroy the world unless her siblings stop her. Way and Ba provide all the ingredients of a superhero team to rival the X-Men and make its colorful adventures a hit. --Carl Hays

** Now a live-action series on Netflix! **

In an inexplicable worldwide event, forty-three extraordinary children were spontaneously born to women who'd previously shown no signs of pregnancy. Millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children; when asked why, his only explanation was, "To save the world."

These seven children form the Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers. Their first adventure at the age of ten pits them against an erratic and deadly Eiffel Tower, piloted by the fearsome zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel. Nearly a decade later, the team disbands, but when Hargreeves unexpectedly dies, these disgruntled siblings reunite just in time to save the world once again.

Interesting homage to the Doom Patrol and X-Men I first saw the Umbrella Academy in the Netflix show and decided to pick up the comic. Honestly I liked the show better. The comic, with its infinite special effects budget, it a lot stranger with more supervillains, adventures and madness. Check out Luther flying with a jet pack to punch out the Eiffel Tower. But Gabriel Bá's art is very stylized and not suited to nuance, so the characters never come alive for me. The story as a whole moves so fast none of the characters really develop, while the show has excellent development. What was impressive was how Gerard Way built a world and made it feel like you were picking up the latest issue of some long-running series like Doom Patrol or X-Men (two comics about weirdos going to a crazy millionaire's super hero school). But in the end it felt like a gimmick rather than something I wanted to stick with.So if you liked the show this might be interesting, but I'm not sure it's good. Not as good as the Netflix series. "The Umbrella Academy" graphic novel falls into the extremely rare category of books which aren't as good as the film/show made from them. This series is sort of juvenile and reads more like a storyboard than a complete story. The most interesting thing about it may be the fact that the author was the former front man for the band "My Chemical Romance".The Netflix series was really good, but I feel like had I read this first it may have ruined the series (mainly by giving away the big mystery in the show). If you're a big fanboy of the Netflix show or the authors band you may enjoy this. But for a general audience looking for something to read I'd say pass. The show is amaze-balls compared to this... So, I was one of the rare people who read this when it was released in 2007. I remember not being a fan because it didn't seem all that fleshed out. There was no depth to the characters. They just existed, and things happened because that's the way it was written. I got rid of my copies of 1-6 because it wasn't my cup of tea (mistake now, I guess, all things considered!)I was skeptical after hearing there was a Netflix show coming out. I was certain I wouldn't like it. I didn't remember why cause I read the comics ~12 years ago, but I was certain it wouldn't be for me. And then I watched it. Holy crap! It was soooo good. It fills in so many details that make the characters and plot make sense. Again, I couldn't remember the details, but I was more than certain half of this stuff never happened in this 6-issue mini-series. So I had to read this again. Yeah--this comic doesn't even start to compare to how good the show is.They knocked it out of the park with the Netflix series, and it only seems loosely based on the comics. I would say this is definitely one of the rare times where the source material is inferior to the live-action adaptation. Feel free to check this out to see where it all started, but don't expect anything as nuanced and well-written as the show.
